2 Tips For Effective HVAC Test Preparation

If you just finished HVAC school, then you may be preparing to take a test to obtain your official HVAC certification. However, like many people, you may feel a little apprehensive about the test and worry about whether you will pass it or not. While HVAC certification exams can be challenging, you can increase the chance that you will perform well on your exam by preparing for it properly.

Read on to learn two tips for effective HVAC test preparation.

1. Know What Your Exam Covers

There are several Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) section 608 HVAC Technician Certification exams. While all have the same core set of questions, each has a set of unique additional questions you must answer that are specific to that test only.

If you are taking an exam to earn your Type 1 EPA certification, then along with the core section, you will also answer questions about small appliances. The Type 2 exam also has questions about high-pressure HVAC systems, while the Type 3 exam also quizzes you on low-pressure HVAC systems.

Unless you are taking the universal test that quizzes you on all aspects of HVAC systems, then hone your study down to just the HVAC topics your exam covers to ensure you do not waste important study time jogging your memory of topics that will not be included on your specific HVAC test.

2. Take Practice Exams

While there are many study techniques you can use to prepare for a test, research has shown that taking practice tests helps people learn more effectively than many other study techniques. While the reason for this is not completely clear to researchers, they suspect it is because the brain stores information a person has been quizzed more effectively than it stores other information.

Practice tests also offer many additional advantages that you cannot obtain using other study techniques.

First, when taking most practice tests, you answer questions about the topics that will be covered on your test that were created by another person or business. This person or business may place questions on the test that cover topics you forgot to include in your notes or that you did not expect would appear on the exam itself. For this reason, taking practice tests helps ensure you do not forget to study topics that may appear on your test.

In addition, practice tests do not exclude questions on topics you think you already have mastered and planned to exclude from your studies. For this reason, when taking a practice HVAC test, you may realize that you are not as prepared to answer questions about a specific HVAC topic, such as refrigerant states, as you thought you were and learn that you should focus additional study time on this topic.
